Implementation Plan for WTEA International Theatre Festival 2023

I. Event: WTEA International Theatre Festival 2023

II. Host: World Theatre Education Alliance (WTEA)

III. Organizers: The Central Academy of Drama (for Beijing session) The Organizing Committee for Guilin Festival (for Guilin session)

IV. Time: Oct. 22 (Sun.)-31 (Tue.), 2023

V. Cities: Beijing and Guilin, China

VI. Activities: 

          During the event, plays will be staged, and workshops, Presidents’ Conference and awarding ceremony will be held in Beijing and Guilin. We now invite every member school to stage a play and conduct a workshop on Acting.

VII. Plays

1. Theme (optional): ‘Tragedies by Shakespeare’ or ‘Works by National Playwright’

2. Running Time: up to 60 minutes

3. Choices of Stage:

Two choices of stage will be provided by the Central Academy of Drama:

1)  700-seat Proscenium Stage, and 2) 350-seat Thrust Stage.

*Schools that choose Thrust Stage will stage their plays twice, one time more than those who choose Proscenium Stage.

We will provide more information about the theatre in Guilin when the locale is decided.

4. Technical requirements will be collected later.

VIII.  Budgetary Details

1. The Central Academy of Drama will pay for the expense for up to 12 students/faculty members from each member school for their board and lodging in Beijing. Every extra participant shall pay 300 yuan per day for board and lodging to the CAD during their stay in Beijing.

2. For Guilin session, the Organizing Committee for Guilin Festival will pay for up to 12 students/faculty members’ Beijing-Guilin roundtrip tickets and board and lodging. Every extra participant shall pay 300 yuan per day to the Organizing Committee in Guilin, and pay for his/her Beijing-Guilin roundtrip tickets.

3. Member schools that stage their performances in Guilin will be rewarded with a 10,000 yuan (pretax) for each show. For each workshop or lecture delivered in Guilin, the Organizing Committee will offer 3,000 yuan (pretax) as reward. Besides, the Organizing Committee will pay for the transportation of props within China and related fees.

4. For member schools without a play, both organizers will pay for up to 2 representatives’ Beijing-Guilin roundtrip tickets, and board and lodging.

5. International travels, as well as the production of stage set, props, costumes and their transportation are at the participants’ own expense.

6. If less than 8 plays sign up to be staged, then the organizers will send invitation to non-member schools and offer them the same conditions as member schools.

IX. Awards

1. There will 3 kinds of awards respectively for Best Play, Best Performance, and Outstanding Performance.

2. Awards for Best Play will be given to the top 1/4 of all entries.

3. For each entry, an Award for Best Performance will be given to the performer with the highest score (or votes), and an Award for Outstanding to the one with the second highest score (or votes).

4. All schools with entries, whether they are WTEA members or not, are eligible to be nominees.

X. Application and Review

1. Please choose the activities your institution will participate in and the venue preferred by filling in online questionnaire: https://www.wjx.cn/vm/r2R9MDF.aspx#. Arrangements will be made according to the order of time we received the applications. If your choice of venue clashes with an existing arrangement, we will discuss with you before making adjustments.

2. Please note that the Central Academy of Drama will review the play (through video) first. We kindly ask you for your understanding and avoid nakedness or politics-related plots or speeches.

3. Time for Submission of Related Materials

1)  Application (by filling up an online questionnaire): by Apr. 30

2)  Introduction to the institution and the President/Rector’s message: by Jun. 15;

3)  Texts (director’s note, synopsis, cast & crew, etc.) and photos related to the play and/or workshop, and the script of the play (for on-site subtitling): by Jul. 15.

More details about subtitles will be sent to participants later.

4)  Video of the play: by Aug. 15.

5)  For applying visa to China, please send us the name list of the representatives, once decided, and the photos of the first page of their passports as soon as possible.
